Exploring life with sight loss

At 69, Maureen Austin thought her adventurous days were behind her. But thanks to Galloways, she’s rediscovering the joy in trying new things and reconnecting with old passions, exploring life with sight loss and finding new confidence along the way.

A Warm Welcome and New Friends

In 2025, Maureen began engaging with Galloways, including attending a vibrant social gathering at Chorley Football Club, where she enthusiastically joined in a game of Boccia. “I didn’t know we could be so competitive!” she laughs.

Saying Yes to the Unexpected

Soon, Maureen found herself saying yes to unexpected opportunities — including a water park trip kindly funded by a generous donor. I was astounded to be invited,” she says. “I’ve never been kayaking before, but I’ll give it a go!”

A Tech Transformation

A game-changer for Maureen was a tech session. Living alone, she had been struggling with her laptop and visibility issues.

With expert help, she now uses an Alexa device, and an enlarged cursor and enhanced laptop screen settings. “It’s fabulous — I don’t lose the cursor anymore!” she beams.

An additional session introduced her to a new magnifier with a built-in light, making everyday tasks like reading and sewing not only possible again but enjoyable.

The Power of Qigong

Perhaps most transformative has been her experience with Qigong. “The slow, rhythmic movements and breath work are incredibly calming,” Maureen shares. “And Mark describes everything so well — it’s perfect for people with sight loss.”

Looking Forward with Confidence

Maureen’s journey with Galloways has been one of rediscovery and resilience. “It’s marvellous how much broader life can be with the right support,” she says. “It’s not about what I can’t do anymore — it’s about all the things I can still enjoy.”
