Poppy Surprised With Life-Changing Meta Glasses
Poppy Surprised With Life-Changing Meta Glasses Thanks to Penwortham Golf Club
Poppy experienced an emotional surprise when she received a pair of Meta Glasses thanks to the generosity of Penwortham Golf Club and support from Galloways.
Family, friends and supporters gathered together for the special moment. However, Poppy had no idea why everyone was there until the glasses were revealed.
The glasses can help with everyday tasks and may offer extra support for people living with sight loss.
Learning How the Glasses Work
Nadia, Galloways’ Learning and Skills Coordinator, introduced Poppy to the glasses and explained how they work.
The AI-powered technology can:
- Read text aloud
- Identify objects
- Take photographs
- Respond to voice commands
- Help in low-light situations
The glasses also come with a portable charging case. As a result, they are easy to carry and use throughout the day.
Poppy quickly began testing the different features. Meanwhile, family and supporters watched the demonstration with excitement.
Building Confidence and Independence
During the session, Poppy practised using voice commands, adjusting the volume and taking pictures.
She also used the glasses to identify items from a gift bag and read text aloud. Because of this, everyone present could see the positive impact the technology may have on her independence.
One emotional discussion focused on how the glasses may help in the dark. Poppy has no vision in dim lighting, so many situations can become difficult.
The glasses could help make those moments easier and less stressful.
Support From the Community
The event also celebrated the generosity of Penwortham Golf Club, whose fundraising efforts helped make the gift possible.
John, a trustee of Galloways, was inspired to raise money for the glasses after seeing how much difference the technology could make.
Thanks to the support of the golf club, Galloways staff and the wider community, Poppy now has access to technology that could positively change daily life.
The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was filled with gratitude, excitement and hope for the future.
Looking Ahead
The event highlighted the powerful impact assistive technology can have for young people living with sight loss.
More importantly, it reinforced the message that sight loss is not a disadvantage. Instead, it is simply one part of what makes Poppy unique.
With support from her community and access to new technology, Poppy can continue building confidence and independence for the future.
