Lee Tries Meta Smart Glasses with Galloways
At Galloways, we’re always exploring new assistive technologies that can help people with sight loss live more independently. Recently, Lee was gifted a pair of Meta Smart Glasses through Galloways and took part in a hands-on accessibility demonstration with Assistive Technology Coordinator Nadia.
Together, they explored how the glasses can help with everyday tasks, from reading printed information and identifying products to describing surroundings and accessing real-time support through Be My Eyes.
What Are Meta Smart Glasses?
Meta Smart Glasses combine a camera, speakers, microphones and artificial intelligence into a lightweight pair of glasses. Using simple voice commands, users can ask questions, capture photos and videos, read information and receive spoken feedback directly through the glasses.
For people living with sight loss, these features can provide quick access to information that may otherwise require assistance from another person.
Reading Mail and Printed Documents
One of the most useful features demonstrated during the session was the ability to read and summarise printed information.
Lee used the glasses to scan a leaflet and asked Meta AI to summarise the contents. The glasses quickly identified the purpose of the document and extracted key details, including a telephone number when requested.
This functionality can be particularly helpful when sorting through post, reading appointment letters or reviewing information leaflets independently.
Describing Surroundings and Identifying Objects
Using the built-in camera, Lee asked Meta AI to describe what was in front of him.
The glasses provided details about the room, including people, furniture and other visible objects. Follow-up questions allowed Lee to gain more information about specific items and individuals in the environment.
The same technology can also identify everyday products, medication packaging and household items, helping users access information more confidently.
Managing Appointments and Daily Tasks
Meta Smart Glasses can do more than describe the world around you.
During the demonstration, Nadia showed how users can create reminders and manage appointments using voice commands. Information extracted from letters and documents can be used to set reminders, helping users keep track of important dates and events.
Accessing Real-Time Support with Be My Eyes
A standout feature of the demonstration was the integration with Be My Eyes.
By saying “Hey Meta, Be My Eyes”, users can connect to a global network of sighted volunteers. Through the glasses’ camera, volunteers can provide assistance with tasks such as reading packaging, identifying products or checking information that may be difficult to access independently.
During the session, Lee successfully connected with a volunteer who helped identify a food seasoning packet in real time.
Sending Messages and Staying Connected
The glasses also support hands-free communication.
Lee used voice commands to send a text message, with Meta AI reading the message back for confirmation before sending it. Users can also make phone calls, send WhatsApp messages and share photos without needing to navigate a smartphone screen.
Lee’s Thoughts on Meta Smart Glasses
By the end of the demonstration, Lee was impressed by how accessible and intuitive the technology felt.
While there is a learning curve with any new device, features such as document reading, scene description, object identification and access to sighted assistance have the potential to increase independence and confidence for people living with sight loss.
