Showdown – the fast-paced, table top extravaganza!

What is Showdown?
Showdown is a tabletop sport designed for the blind and visually impaired, but it can also be enjoyed by sighted players since all participants wear a blindfold to help level the playing field. The game requires a showdown table, blindfolds, two rackets, a protective glove, and a small ball filled with marbles (so its position can be heard).
How did it begin?
Showdown was created in 1977 by Patrick York, a young Canadian who experienced sight loss and wanted to develop a tabletop recreational game or sport for the blind. His vision was to allow blind individuals to demonstrate their independence by playing a game without requiring assistance from sighted players. After years of effort and planning, the first game of Showdown was played in 1980.
Showdown’s success soon led to its inclusion as a demonstration sport at the Olympics for the Disabled in the Netherlands. It quickly gained popularity among blind and visually impaired athletes, sparking competitive events. As the sport grew in popularity, it was featured in the 1988 Seoul Paralympics.
Why choose Showdown as a sport?
Showdown has proven that with determination, people can overcome barriers and achieve their goals, regardless of visual ability. Many competitors at Galloways have shared how the game has boosted their confidence, both as individuals and as part of a team. The combination of social interaction, physical activity, and sheer fun has had a profoundly positive impact on their lives.
The Rules
The rules of Showdown are straightforward. The game is played in two sets, each up to 11 points, with a 2-point difference required to win. In championships, the semi-finals and finals consist of three sets.
Players earn:
- 2 points for every goal scored.
- 1 point if the opponent commits a fault.
Faults include:
- Playing with the body.
- Defending inside the goal.
- Hitting the ball out of bounds.
- Striking the board in the middle of the table.
Do Galloways host Showdown events?
Absolutely! We host weekly Showdown events where you can drop by, enjoy a match, and most importantly, share some laughs! Many of our service users have expressed that Showdown strikes a perfect balance between competition and camaraderie. It brings together people from different places, helping those with sight loss to forge connections and feel supported. We have recently hosted Sheffield Strikers from Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind for a healthy day of competition and peer support and hope to branch out to even more teams to put our team’s skills to the test!
