Meta’s partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley has brought AI-powered smart glasses into the mainstream. These devices combine stylish frames with powerful artificial intelligence, making them far more than just sunglasses. For people with sight loss or other disabilities, they represent a real step forward in wearable assistive technology.
Why AI Glasses Matter
Traditionally, assistive devices designed for blind and visually impaired people have been expensive, often costing thousands of pounds. Meta AI glasses, however, are mainstream consumer products—meaning they’re priced similarly to premium sunglasses but come with advanced AI features included. This makes them more affordable, accessible, and socially inclusive.
Key Features
-
Hands-free interaction: Simply talk to the glasses to ask questions, read text, or get descriptions.
-
Text recognition: Read menus, letters, bank statements, or street signs. The AI can also summarise information, so you don’t have to listen to everything in full.
-
Environmental awareness: The “Look and See” feature can describe surroundings—objects, people, or locations.
-
Live translation: Translate text in real time into your preferred language.
-
Media & calls: Send messages, listen to music, record videos, and make calls. A WhatsApp video call, for example, lets friends or family see what you’re seeing through the camera.
-
Be My Eyes integration: Instantly connect to a sighted volunteer who can guide you in real time—whether you’re choosing items in a shop or reading a menu in a restaurant.
Wearable Advantages
Unlike phone-based apps, glasses leave your hands free. This is especially important if you’re using a cane, holding shopping, or walking with a guide dog. It also feels safer in public spaces—there’s no need to take out your phone.
Models and Developments
-
Ray-Ban Meta (1st & 2nd Gen): Classic style with cameras, AI, and voice assistant. The second generation improves battery life and camera quality (up to 3K resolution).
-
Oakley Meta: Sporty frames with enhanced cameras and longer battery life.
-
Oakley Vanguard (new release): Wraparound frames with the camera in the centre, ideal for sports like running or cycling. Integrated with fitness platforms like Strava.
AI in Action: Real-Life Scenarios
-
In a shop: Ask the glasses to read shelf labels or connect via video call to a family member to help choose products.
-
In a restaurant: Get the AI to summarise the menu or connect with Be My Eyes for live assistance.
-
At home: Use AI to read documents in context—bank statements, leaflets, or instructions. Unlike older OCR apps, the AI understands layout and order.
-
On the go: Translate street signs, navigate new environments, or record hands-free video along your walking or running route.
Looking Ahead
Meta is already experimenting with in-lens displays for future glasses. These may not be useful for people with visual impairment, but the audio-first experience will remain central. As AI models evolve, the personalisation will also grow—learning your preferences, summarisation style, and the way you like to receive information.
Bottom line: Meta AI glasses are more than a gadget. They’re a mainstream, affordable assistive tool that combines fashion with life-changing accessibility. For many, they remove the need to juggle a phone, specialist device, or multiple gadgets—everything is built into one wearable pair of glasses.
