Volunteer Stories- Alex and Lorraine

2nd-8th June 2025 is Volunteers’ Week and we are celebrating the unrivalled input and dedication of Galloways volunteers all week.
Meet Alex and Lorraine who tell their stories about their motivations for becoming Galloways volunteers.
Alex’s Story: Over a Year of Volunteering, Making Connections and Giving Back to the Galloways Community
What inspired you to volunteer at Galloways?
“Our eldest child is registered as severely visually impaired. We quickly realised how many opportunities exist for people like our child because of volunteers. That inspired me to give back in the same way.”
What do you do as a volunteer?
“I make drinks, chat to service users about their week, and offer a listening ear. I help set up and tidy away, and I’ve also supported event days.”
Why do you volunteer?
“With my children getting older, I found I had more free time. Volunteering has become a meaningful way to use that time – and it makes a real difference.”
Would you recommend volunteering?
“Absolutely. I feel appreciated and I look forward to connecting with the people we support. Those small interactions matter.”
Lorraine’s Journey: From Service User to Volunteer, Giving Back and Building Confidence Through 6 Months of Meaningful Involvement at Galloway’s
What motivated you to volunteer?
“I wanted to give back to Galloways for the help and support they’ve given me as a service user.”
What does your volunteering involve?
“I’m a lived experience ambassador – I share my sight loss journey, help at fundraising events, and welcome new people at activities. I’ve even supported curling sessions, collecting money and checking off attendees.”
What do you enjoy about it?
“Volunteering gives me confidence, helps me meet new people, and builds skills I didn’t know I had. Most of all, it’s rewarding and helps you make great friends.”
Would you recommend it to others?
“Definitely. It’s a valuable and meaningful way to spend your time.”
It is an absolute pleasure having Alex and Lorraine as part of our volunteer family at Galloways. We couldn’t do what we do without them – thank you!
