Volunteer Stories- Adrian and Joanne

2nd-8th June 2025 is Volunteers’ Week and we are celebrating the unrivalled input and dedication of Galloways volunteers all week.
Meet Adrian and Joanne who tell their stories about their motivations for becoming Galloways volunteers.
Adrian’s Story: Building a Kinder Community Through 3 Years of Volunteering with Galloways
After retiring, Adrian wanted to put his time, health, and energy to good use and he found the perfect place to do that at Galloways. For the past three years, he’s been a committed volunteer in Southport, helping with everything from coffee mornings to Christmas events.
“I believe a compassionate society begins with how we treat each other day-to-day,” Adrian shares. “Volunteering is a way to live those values, fairness, empathy, and civic responsibility, in our own communities.”
Through his support at the “Brews Up” coffee mornings and beyond, Adrian shows how even small acts of service can have a big impact. And in giving his time, he’s gained something too: purpose, connection, and the joy of helping others.
Joanne’s Journey: From Eye Appointment to Volunteer Superstar
Joanne came to Galloways for help with her cataracts but she left with so much more. After a chat with Pam, she was inspired to start volunteering… and over three years later, she hasn’t looked back.
Now a familiar face at “Brews Up” and the bowling group, Joanne brings warmth, laughter, and a listening ear to every session. “I’ve made loads of brews, listened to stories, helped guide people, and even had a go at Braille!” she says.
Volunteering has been more than giving her time, it’s helped Joanne grow in confidence and build lasting friendships. “It’s flexible, fun, and really fulfilling. Even a small amount of time can brighten someone’s day.
It is an absolute pleasure having Adrian and Joanne as part of our volunteer family at Galloways. We couldn’t do what we do without them – thank you!
