Low Vision Practitioner Training

Empowering Our Team Through Low Vision Practitioner Training

This week, our ECLOs and CLSAs completed Low Vision Practitioner Training, delivered by Optima in partnership with Vision Support Barrow and Sight Advice South Lakes. The sessions introduced key low vision principles, explored the functional impact of sight loss, and demonstrated a wide range of practical aids and solutions.

Building Confidence in Patient Support

Although Paula, our Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO), doesn’t carry out low vision assessments in her hospital-based role, she gained valuable knowledge that will help her better support patients.“The course was very well organised and covered many useful, relevant topics. I feel more confident in helping patients understand what to expect and how different aids might support them.”

As a result, Paula now feels more prepared to answer questions and guide patients through their next steps with clarity and confidence.

The Power of Lighting

One of the most surprising and useful insights from the training was the importance of lighting. In many cases, improving lighting, rather than relying solely on magnification, can make everyday tasks much easier.“The section on lighting was eye-opening. Often, it’s not magnification that’s needed, it’s improved lighting that helps people read more easily.”

Danielle, Community Sight Loss Advisor

This reinforced the idea that small, simple changes can have a big impact on independence and quality of life.

Engaging, Practical Training

Furthermore, Andy, the trainer, delivered the sessions with great energy and passion. He shared personal stories and demonstrated a wide range of tools, including magnifiers, daylight lamps, and reading guides. “Andy was fantastic, knowledgeable, engaging, and full of insight. We all came away inspired to apply what we’d learned.”

Adele, Community Sight Loss Advisor

His enthusiasm made the learning experience not only informative but also memorable and motivating.

Moving Forward with Confidence

Overall, the training gave our team the tools and confidence to offer even better guidance to service users. We now feel more equipped to explain how different aids work, suggest the right solutions, and help people make the most of their remaining vision.

We’re excited to put this knowledge into practice and continue improving the support we provide across our communities.
