Graham’s Story

Former Paralympian Grahams love of cooking was severely hampered by his sight loss and learning difficulties which hindered him following recipes and independently managing tasks safely in the kitchen.

Despite his disabilities Graham, 44, has always remained active taking part in running, dancing and karaoke sessions, and being part of social groups like Chorley Brews Up.

But his keenness to cook on his own was only made possible when Galloways provided a free Alexa device into his home.

The main aim was to enable Graham to access recipes and cooking instructions easily with Alexa’s instructions which simplified the tasks in the kitchen by enabling him to focus on one step at a time.

The device has also allowed Graham to:

  • Access recipes by simply using voice commands eliminating the need for complex written instructions, unreadable text sizes and assistance from support staff
  • Create shopping lists by verbally adding items to the list which streamlined the process of managing his kitchen supplies
  • Setting timers verbally making Alexa his kitchen companion and ensuring that his meals were cooked to perfection without others having to keep stepping in to check on progress
  • Enhance his independence which has significantly boosted his confidence and trust in himself

Graeme said: “Galloways provide an excellent service. My Alexa now means I can return to enjoying cooking. The device helps take the stress away of not being able to see the text in recipe books and enables me to work in the kitchen without continual supervision.”

Graeme Ballard, of Galloways Learning Skills and Lifestyle and Community Services, said: “The collaboration between Galloways and the integration of an Alexa device has been instrumental in enhancing Graham’s quality of life.

“By simplifying the cooking process and fostering independence, Graham can focus on his passion for cooking, all while enjoying the convenience of technology.”

Graeme added: “Graham’s experience demonstrates the positive impact of assistive technology in enabling individuals with multiple disabilities to live more fulfilling and self-reliant lives.

“The fact that we can equip people from low income backgrounds with free Alexa devices removes the financial barrier to accessing independence.”

Previously, Graham has received technology support enabling him to use features such as larger text and Zoom to navigate on his phone. This has also allowed him to install and set up the Alexa app independently.
