GIFT AID

Gift Aid is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to charity. It is a scheme administered by HM Revenue and Customs which allows us to claim 25p for every £1 that you donate. So, for example, if you donate £20 we can claim an extra £5, making your gift worth £25.

Understanding Gift Aid: Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gift Aid involve any additional cost to me?

No, Gift Aid does not cost you anything extra. By allowing us to claim Gift Aid, you enable us to reclaim the tax you have already paid on your donation from HMRC. This increases the value of your contribution at no extra cost to you.

Who can claim Gift Aid?

To qualify for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer who pays sufficient Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the amount that will be reclaimed by all charities you support during the tax year. Note that other taxes, like VAT and Council Tax, are not eligible for Gift Aid.

Is there a minimum or maximum donation amount for claiming Gift Aid?

No, there is no limit on the donation amount eligible for Gift Aid. As long as your total tax paid in a given year covers the amount reclaimed, any donation, large or small, can qualify.

Can Gift Aid be claimed if I don’t pay tax but my partner does?

Gift Aid must be claimed by the individual who pays the tax. If you do not pay tax, but your partner does, then the donation should be made in their name to qualify for Gift Aid.

I’ve already filled out a Gift Aid declaration for your charity. Do I need to do it again?

No further action is required if you’ve already made a Gift Aid declaration. This will apply to all future donations you make unless you inform us of any changes in your tax status.

Is it possible to claim Gift Aid with multiple charities?

Yes, you can claim Gift Aid for donations to multiple charities. However, you must ensure that your total tax paid is sufficient to cover the amount reclaimed by all the charities you support. You may need to contact the relevant charities to adjust your declarations if it isn’t.

What should I do if my tax circumstances change?

If your tax situation changes, and you no longer pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid being claimed, please notify us immediately. This will allow us to cease claiming Gift Aid on your future donations.

Should I report Gift Aid donations on my tax return?

If you complete a Self-Assessment tax return, or if you are a higher-rate taxpayer, you should include all your Gift Aid donations on your tax return. This allows you to claim any additional tax relief due to you. Standard-rate taxpayers who do not file a tax return do not need to take further action.

How do I know if I pay tax on my pension?

Your pension provider will issue a P60 form annually if you receive a pension. This form details any tax deductions and helps you confirm whether you pay Income Tax.

How does Gift Aid benefit higher-rate taxpayers?

The charity can only claim back the introductory tax rate (20%) for higher-rate taxpayers. You can reclaim the difference between the higher rate you pay and the introductory rate through your Self-Assessment tax return or by adjusting your tax code with HMRC.
