Salterforth to Greenberfield - Walk Guide - Section 05

Close to Cockshott Bridge, no 152, the boatyard and marina were established in the 1980s, the first major development for pleasure boats in the area, though people have used the canal for leisure throughout its history. A tactile panel here explains about how boats were towed by horses. On the towpath side of the bridge is a reminder of the canal’s commercial days; a lime kiln. Limestone was burnt with coal to produce lime which was used as a fertiliser on the fields, as a mortar for building, and for painting walls to make the inside of workshops light enough, especially during dark winter days.

Towards Salterforth continue until you reach the remains of the railway bridge over the canal, or Locng in Bridge if you are walking towards Greenberfield.
