Salterforth to Greenberfield - Walk Guide - Section 02

Between two bends in the canal, a footpath into the field on the towpath side follows the line of the old Skipton Road. One of its drystone walls survives almost intact. This was the original main road from Barnoldswick to Thornton, and a bridge should have been built here. Instead, the canal company built a new road to the locks alongside the canal as the steep bank here would have been a difficult and expensive place to build a bridge. The land owner complained and won his court case, but died before he could force the canal company to close their new road. Most locals would have been on the canal company’s side as the new road is level, and would have been much easier for horse-drawn traffic.

Now continue to Skipton Road Bridge, no 154A, or on to the locks at Greenberfield.
