National Award for the Canal Heritage Project

Well done to everyone who helped develop the Canal Heritage Walk at Johnson Lock. The project was highlighted by Nick Smith from British Waterways who nominated it for the BURA Waterways Renaissance Award.

With this project Galloway’s got through to the final Pete Ottewell and Lyn Garside were invited to Liverpool for the results of this Nationwide Award.

It was with great pride that Galloway’s received the Winners Award along with Mike Clarke, the historian and chairman of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society who worked with us on this now nationally recognised project.

Here is an extract from the project overview
For many, the canal network epitomises the country’s industrial heritage. Bringing the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to Life is an innovative, community-led project centred around canal heritage walks in the Lancashire area tailored to the needs of visually impaired and blind people, but also designed to be used by sighted people. The walks were developed through a series of workshops by Galloway’s Society for the Blind drawing on guidance and information from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society.

Thank you everyone who attended the Canal Heritage Open Doors to give input and develop the audio guide, tactile signage, bringing back the Leeds Liverpool Canal to life.
